2026 AI Security Predictions: Data Exhaust, Autonomous Adversaries, and the Identity Crisis

As 2025 closes, the cybersecurity industry's forward-looking assessments for 2026 converge on a specific concern that most organizations are not yet tracking: AI data exhaust.
George Gerchow, Chief Security Officer at Bedrock Data, predicts that 2026 will see the first major breach directly attributed to AI-generated data exhaust — forgotten vector databases, abandoned prompt logs from discontinued pilots, and orphaned training data left accessible on cloud storage. This is not theoretical. Organizations that have experimented with AI over the past two years have generated enormous volumes of data artifacts that were never inventoried, never classified, and never included in data retention policies.
Shadow AI amplifies this problem. When employees use unsanctioned AI tools to process work data, they create data artifacts outside any governance framework. No ticket was filed. No data classification was applied. No retention policy covers the output. The data simply exists, discoverable, and potentially containing sensitive information that was never meant to leave the enterprise.
The second prediction cluster concerns autonomous adversaries. Security researchers documented the first widely acknowledged AI-driven cyberattack campaign in 2025 — designated GTG-1002 — where AI systems automated most operational steps. The attack did not use AI for novel exploit discovery. It used AI for speed and scale: automating reconnaissance, credential testing, lateral movement, and data exfiltration. The asymmetry is stark: defenders need AI governance; attackers just need AI.
The third prediction addresses what analysts call the identity crisis. AI agents that connect to enterprise systems via MCP, OAuth, and service accounts create a new category of identity that does not map cleanly to existing identity management frameworks. An AI agent with access to Slack, Google Workspace, and a CRM system has elevated privileges that traditional IAM was not designed to govern. When 97 percent of AI breach victims lacked access controls, this identity gap is where the exposure lives.
The common thread across all three predictions: the artifacts, identities, and access patterns that AI creates outside governance frameworks become tomorrow's breach vectors. The time to address them is before the breach, not after.
